When BESCOM goes down on a hot afternoon, most rooftop solar systems go silent too. That surprises a lot of people. They assumed solar meant independence from the grid — but standard grid-tied systems are actually designed to shut off during outages for safety reasons. So what does it take to keep your lights, fans, and fridge running when the power fails?
It’s possible — but the answer depends on your setup, and the difference in cost is significant. Here’s what you need to know before you plan for backup power.
Why Your Solar System Shuts Off During a Power Cut
This is the most common misconception we encounter after 25+ years of solar installations in Bengaluru.
A standard grid-tied solar system feeds excess power back into the BESCOM grid and draws from it when your panels aren’t producing enough. When the grid goes down, your inverter detects the outage and shuts itself off. This is called anti-islanding protection — a safety feature that prevents your system from accidentally energising the grid while linemen are working on it.
So yes, even if the sun is shining bright at 2 PM and your panels are generating full power — your home will still go dark during a BESCOM outage if you have a standard grid-tied setup.
What You Actually Need: A Hybrid or Off-Grid Setup
To keep your home running during power cuts, you need one of two solutions:
1. Hybrid Solar System (Most Popular Choice)
A hybrid system combines solar panels with a battery bank and a hybrid inverter that can seamlessly switch between grid, solar, and battery power. When the grid fails, your home automatically draws from the battery — no interruption, no manual switching.
What it powers: Lights, fans, Wi-Fi router, phone chargers, and with a larger battery bank — your refrigerator and TV too.
Typical setup for a 2–3 BHK home in Bengaluru:
- 3 kW – 5 kW solar panels
- 5 kWh – 10 kWh lithium battery bank
- Hybrid inverter (5 kVA)
Estimated cost: ₹3.5 lakh – ₹6 lakh depending on battery capacity and brand.
2. Off-Grid Solar System
An off-grid system runs entirely independent of BESCOM — no grid connection at all. Your panels charge batteries during the day, and your home runs on stored power round the clock.
This setup is ideal for farmhouses, remote properties, or areas with very unreliable grid supply. For most urban homes in Bengaluru, a hybrid system is more practical and cost-effective.
How Long Will the Battery Last?
This depends on how much you consume during the outage. A rough breakdown:
| Load | Approx. Consumption | Hours on 5 kWh Battery |
|---|---|---|
| 5 LED lights + 3 fans | ~400W | 10–12 hours |
| Add refrigerator | ~550W total | 7–8 hours |
| Add TV + Wi-Fi | ~700W total | 6–7 hours |
| Add 1 AC (1 ton) | ~1,800W total | 2–3 hours |
Running an air conditioner on battery backup requires significantly larger storage — usually 10 kWh or more — and adds considerable cost to your system.
Is Battery Backup Worth It in Bengaluru?
Bengaluru’s power supply has improved significantly over the last decade. For most areas within the city — Koramangala, Indiranagar, JP Nagar, Whitefield — outages are infrequent and short. In that case, a standard grid-tied system gives you the best return on investment, and you can always add battery storage later as costs continue to fall.
However, if you’re in a peripheral area — Devanahalli, Anekal, Kanakapura Road — or if your building has an unreliable feeder, the case for battery backup gets much stronger.
Our honest advice: Don’t buy battery backup for the fear of outages that rarely happen. Do buy it if your area has at least 2–4 hours of load shedding per day, or if you work from home and can’t afford interruptions.
Future-Proof Your System
Even if you go grid-tied today, choose a hybrid-ready inverter. This costs only marginally more upfront and allows you to add batteries later without replacing your entire inverter — saving you significant money if you upgrade down the line.
